Defying the adverse Arctic weather, units of the Karelian Front pursued the
enemy doggedly into Norway to secure on October 25 the town of KIRKENES, a major
seaport in the Barents Sea, and over 30 other Norwegian settlements, including
KROFT FETERBUHT, STURBUKT, JARDFJORBOTN, ROPELVEN, JAKOBSNES, ELVENES,
BJORKHEIM, HEBUGTEN, SANDNES, BJORNEVAND, LONGFJORDBOTN, NIGORD, FOSSGORD,
LANGLI, and SVANVIK. On the way to LIBAVA, our forces successfully repulsed
multiple armor-supported enemy infantry attacks and inflicted heavy casualties
and damage upon the enemy. In East Prussia, our forces continued their
offensive and, in defiance of stiff enemy resistance and its counterattacks,
took many heavily fortified settlements, including BALDEN, PETERAICEN, VILPISEN,
DRUSKEN, BARAISKEMEN, LAVISKEMEN, PABALLEN, GROSS TRAKENEN, MATCUTKEMEN,
EISENHUTTE, GROSS TRAKISCHKEN, SUJKEN, and KLEIN KUMMETSCHEN. To the
northwest of PRAHA (in the outskirts of WARSAW), our forces, together with units
of the 1st Polish Army, were engaged in local fighting, nonetheless securing the
following settlements: LAISKI, VELISEVO, WIENGERSKI-KONTY, REMBELSHIZNA,
RUZOPOLE, HOSOWKA, DOMBROWKA, PLUDY, GENRIKOW, TARHOMIN, and ZERAN. In
Czechoslovakia to the northeast and southeast of MUKACEVO, our forces overcame
enemy resistance, broke down its defenses, and secured over 50 settlements,
including IZVOR, OLENEVO, SOLOCIN, PASIKI (14 kilometers to the northeast of
MUKACEVO), DUSINA, DOVGE, VELIKI RAKOVEC, ROKOSOV and the railroad stations of
NELIPINO, DOVGE, and ZADNE. Units of the 2nd Ukrainian Front on October 25
stormed the enemy out of important railroad junctions in North Transylvania -
the cities of SATU MARE and KAREI, and secured over 100 other settlements,
including the major settlements of BATARCI, HALMEU, TURULUNG, AGRIS, PELISOR,
LAZURI, OSVAREU, VETIS, DARA, SETMEREL, GILVACI, KEMIN, URZICENI, SANISLEU, and
the railroad stations of HALMEU, MIKILA, OSVAREU, LAZURI, SETMEREL, GILVACI, and
SANISLEU, thus fully liberating Transylvania. Reconnaissance operations and
local fighting were reported elsewhere on the front. On October 24, our
forces destroyed 112 German tanks on all fronts. The Soviet air and air defense
forces downed 67 enemy aircraft.
