The 1st Belarussian Front forces mounted an offensive from their footholds on the western bank of the Oder and, supported by massed artillery fires and air attacks, penetrated the well-fortified layered German defenses east of Berlin. Having covered from 60 km to 100 km, they took the towns of Frankfurt-am-Oder, Wandlitz, Oranienburg, Birkenwerder, Henningsdorf, Pankow, Friedrichsfelde, Karlshorst and Kopenik and burst into the capital city of Germany, Berlin. On April 22, over 4,000 prisoners were taken and 85 field guns, 3,100 wheeled vehicles, 67 steam engines, 1,800 railroad cars and 30 military gear depots were seized.

The 1st Ukrainian Front forces launched an offensive supported by massed artillery fires and air attacks, penetrated the well-fortified layered German defenses on the Neisse, covered 80-160 km, took the settlements of Cottbus, Lubben, Zossen, Beelitz, Luckenwalde, Treuenbrictzen, Zahna, Marienfelde, Trebbin, Rangsdorf, Diedersdorf and Teltow and burst into Berlin from the south.

At the same time, the Front’s troops dislodged the enemy from the cities and towns of Essen, Kirchhein, Falkenberg, Mulberg and Pulsnitz and reached the Elbe river northwest of Dresden.

On April 22, the 1st Ukrainian Front forces took over 7,000 prisoners and seized 200 tanks, 105 field guns and 3,000 wheeled vehicles.

Continuing their attack, the 4th Ukrainian Front forces had by late April 22 captured the Czechoslovak town of Opava (Troppau), a major road junction and a well-fortified enemy strongpoint.

In Czechoslovakia south west of Hodonin, the 2nd Ukrainian Front forces drove the enemy out of the town of Mikulov and the settlements of Lednice, Pulgari, Pavlov, Perna, Pratlsbrunn, Dolny Dunaevice and Dobre Pole.

No major changes were reported on the other parts of the front.

On April 22, 165 enemy tanks and self-propelled guns were damaged and destroyed and 61 enemy aircraft was downed in aerial combat and by anti-aircraft guns on all fronts.
