On October 16, to the west and southwest of RIGA, our forces continued an
offensive to take the following settlements: VARKALKROGS, VIKULI, PINTI, PLUDI,
ANNASMUIZA, LAPSAS, ADIENI, MAZCENA, SUDMALKALNS, DALBE, GAISARAGI, TISI,
VOLGUNTE and the railroad stations of LIELUPE, AVOTI, and DALBE. In North
Transylvania, our forces, together with Romanian forces, secured over 100
settlements, including the town and the railroad station of BORSA, the important
settlements of MOISCIU, FELSO-VISZHSZHO, FELSO-SELISZHTE, SECELU, ROMULI, TELC,
SUPLAI, TENES, OLA-LAPOS, EPUSUL UNGURAS, VIMA, ROGNA, SIMISNA, GIRBOU, KEKIS,
BREB, STINA, CEMERLE, BUCUM, BOGDANA, and the railroad stations of MOISCIU,
FELSO-VISZHSZHO, OLSO-VISZHSZHO, KECKZU, GILGEU, ILEANDA MARE, GERBEU, AGIRES,
and STINA. Our forces, together with units of the People’s Liberation Army of
Yugoslavia, approached BELGRADE, the capital of Yugoslavia. In the outskirts of
BELGRADE, our forces captured 1,500 German personnel. Bulgarian forces,
together with units of People’s Liberation Army of Yugoslavia and Soviet forces,
fought the Nazis to secure the Yugoslav city and railroad junction of NIS, the
town of LESKOVAC, and important settlements of LEBANE, VRANJE, and
GRDOLICA. Reconnaissance operations and local fighting were reported
elsewhere on the front. On October 15, our forces destroyed 93 German tanks
on all fronts. The Soviet air and air defense forces downed 57 enemy
aircraft.
