On October 12, on the way to RIGA our forces continued an offensive to secure the following settlements: LANGECIEMS, KALNGALASCIEMS, JAUNCIEMS, EJLENBURGA, JUGLASMUJZA (9 kilometers to the east of RIGA), SAVELI, SVALKANI, PRIEDE, TESTERCIEMS, VILCINI, NARNEVICI and the railroad stations of LANGECIEMS, BALTEZERS, SAURESI, and SALASPILS.
To the north and southeast of KLAIPEDA (MEMEL), our forces secured over 50 settlements, including OZOLMEZI, MIEMIS, SKICI, PAPES, TONJUCIEMS, JAVNE, RIMJENTI, LAZDUJANAI, SARTINIKI, MARGISKI, and the railroad stations of ECI and PAPE.
To the west of the city of SAKIAI, our forces launched an offensive to take the settlements of PRJEVOZNIKI (First and Second), DEVAICE, ROCISKIAI, ZURAI, SILINIKAI, BUTVILISKIAI, SOLOVIKI, SILGALE, and RUKSNE.
In North Transylvania, our forces secured the towns of ORADNA, BORGO and 80 other settlements, including the major settlements of MAGURA, JOSENII BIRGAULUI, KUSMA, PETRES, BILAK, DIPSA, SAS-MATE, BUZA, DJEKE, PALATKA, GEDELINU, FEIRUDENI, SUCAG, DZILEU and the railroad stations of RADNA, NODILVA, MEGURA, TIHA, BYSTRITA-BYRGELUJ, NAGYIDA, LEKENCE, SZASZSZENTGYORD, and KECED.
On October 12, the cavalry and armor of the 2nd Ukrainian Front aptly outflanked the enemy to take the important Transylvanian economic and administrative center and major transport junction of ORADEA-MARE (GROSSWARDEIN).
In Hungary, to the southwest of the city of DEBRECEN, our forces, continuing their offensive, took the town and railroad junction of KISUISALLAS, the town and important railroad station of KUNHEGYES, and the following important settlements: TIS-SASENTIMRE, ABADSALOK, TISZAFOLDVAR, and KUNSENTMARTON.
To the southwest of the Hungarian city of SEGED, our forces in Yugoslavia took the town and major railroad junction of SUBOTICA, the town and railroad junction of HORGOS.
To the southeast of BELGRADE, our forces, together with units of the People’s Liberation Army of Yugoslavia, took the town of SMEDEREVO, and secured over 60 other settlements, including the major settlements of KUSICI, MAILOVEC, SREDNEVO, PANKOVO, DOLNA LIVADICA, PALANKA, GLIBOVAC, NATALINCI, OVILAINAC and the railroad stations of PALANKA and GLIBOVAC.
Reconnaissance operations and local fighting were reported elsewhere on the front.
On October 11, our forces destroyed 98 German tanks on all fronts. The Soviet air and air defense forces downed 26 enemy aircraft.
On the way to RIGA, our forces attacked at night to take the enemy completely by surprise. Awed and shocked, the Nazis retreated so fast they did not even have time to explode the mine-studded passages across the GAUJA river. Soviet forces, promptly crossing the river, took the railroad station of LANGECIEMS. The Nth division advanced to the PSKOV – RIGA highway to stave the Germans to Lake JUGLAS EZERS. Units acting between the rivers MAZA JUGLA and ZAPADNAYA (WESTERN) DVINA, are now 9 kilometers to the east of RIGA, having defeated two German infantry regiments in the course of one day of fighting. Overcoming stiff enemy resistance, our forces are approaching RIGA slowly but surely.
