In the course of February 4, north and northeast of the city of KONIGSBERG,
our troops fought to clear the Samland peninsula of the enemy, seizing the town
and railway station of GRANZ and over 30 other settlements, including MICHELAU,
GRUNHOFF, GARBSEIDEN, ALLEINEN, POBETEN, REGEHNEN. Our troops mopped up the last
groups of the enemy in the KURISCHE NEHRUNG Spit, which separates the KURISCHES
HAFF Bay from the Baltic Sea.
Troops of the 3rd BELARUSSIAN Front, continuing their offensive, took by
force the towns of LANDSBERG and BARTENSTEIN, major Nazi communications centers
and powerful strongholds in the central regions of Eastern Prussia, and seized
over 40 other settlements, including NEUE ASSMUNIS, ZIDDAU, LEGINEN, DAMERAU,
ALBRECHTSDORF, EICHEN.
North and southeast of FRANKFURT-AM-ODER, our troops seized the towns of
BERWALDE, NEUEDAMM, ZIBINGEN and over a hundred other settlements.
On February 3, our troops captured 180 guns from the enemy and took over
1,500 Nazi men and officers prisoner in this area.
In BUDAPEST, our troops continued fighting to eliminate the enemy garrison
encircled in the western part of the city (BUDA) and seized 12 blocks.
Reconnaissance raids and local fighting in a number of areas were reported on
the other sections of the front.
On February 3, 120 German tanks were disabled and destroyed on all fronts. A
total of 30 enemy aircraft were brought down in aerial combat or by
anti-aircraft guns.
North and northeast of the city of Konigsberg, our infantry and tank units,
supported by artillery, launched powerful attacks at the enemy, and, racing
ahead, reached the Danzig Bay coast. In this way, the group of Nazi troops
operating on the Samland peninsula were split into two parts isolated from each
other. Continuing to launch attacks, our troops seized the town of Granz on the
Baltic Sea. Nazi corpses, enemy equipment and arms are scattered over the sites
of battles. The routed and demoralized Nazi units are out of contact with each
another. Soviet solders are driving Nazi units towards the sea and routing them.
Individual enemy units are giving up resistance and laying down arms. There have
been a number of cases where German soldiers, before surrendering, kill SS-men
and officers who make them continue fighting.
In the Kurisches Haff Bay, our troops captured 130 river vessels.
