In the course of February 14, our troops seized as a result of offensive
fighting north and northwest of the town of BYDGOSZCZ (BROMBERG) over 50
settlements, including BREMIN, ZDROJE, OSTROWO, DEMBOWEC, NEUSUMMIN, JELENZ,
LICHNAU, MOSNITZ, BLUMFELDE, WIEDELSHOF. On February 11, over 500 Nazi men and
officers were taken prisoner in the fighting in this area.
On February 13, the troops of the 1st BELARUSSIAN Front, crushing the
resistance of the encircled enemy group, stormed the town of SCHNEIDEMUHL, an
important communications center and a powerful enemy defensive stronghold in
Eastern Pomerania. According to confirmed data, in the fighting to eliminate the
encircled enemy group and seize the town of SCHNEIDEMUHL, the troops took over
5,000 Nazi men and officers prisoner and captured the following trophies: 203
aircraft, 30 guns, 34 mortars, 217 machineguns, about 5,000 rifles and
submachine-guns, 286 motor vehicles, 102 tractors and prime movers, 109 carts
loaded with military cargoes, 97 locomotives, 1,508 railway cars, 51 army
depots. The enemy lost over 7,000 men and officers in killed alone.
Troops of the 1st UKRAINIAN Front, continuing their offensive, took by force
the following towns in German Schlesien: NEUSTEDTEL, NEUSALTZ, FREISTADT,
SPROTTAU, GOLDBERG, JAUER and STRIGAU – major communications centers and
powerful enemy defensive strongholds, as well as over 200 other settlements.
Fighting in this area on February 13, our troops captured 200 enemy aircraft at
aerodromes and took over 2,100 enemy men and officers prisoner.
According to additional information, the troops of the 2ns and 3rd UKRAINIAN
Fronts, fighting to eliminate the enemy’s group encircled in the area of
BUDAPEST, took 12,700 Nazi men and officers prisoner, with most of them wounded.
Among those taken prisoner are: Col. Gen. HENDI, commander of the 1st Hungarian
army corps; Maj. Gen. BAUMANN, commander of the 12th Hungarian army corps; Maj.
Gen. CZINKES ORNU, commandant of BUDAPEST; Col. LEDING, commander of artillery
of the 9th German army SS corps. Among the killed Nazi men and officers, the
corpses of Maj. Gen. RUHMOR, commander of the 8th German cavalry SS division,
and Maj. Gen. ZECHENTER, commander of the 22nd German cavalry SS division, were
found. The small remnants of the encircled enemy group managed to force their
way to the woods northwest of BUDAPEST where they have been blocked again and
are being eliminated by our troops.
Reconnaissance raids and local fighting in a number of areas were reported on
the other sections of the front.
On February 13, 116 German tanks were disabled and destroyed on all fronts. A
total of 9 enemy aircraft were brought down in aerial combat or by anti-aircraft
guns.
