In the course of February 15, our troops, fighting south of KONIGSBERG,
seized the settlements of ROSITTEN, KUMKEIM, GROSS KLAUSITTEN, LIEBENTHAL,
LICHTENAU, LOTTERFELD, SONNWALDE, HEINRIKAU.
On February 15, the troops of the 2nd BELARUSSIAN Front, continuing their
offensive, seized the towns of CHOJNICE (KONITZ) and TUCHOLA (TUCHEL), major
communications centers and powerful enemy defensive strongholds in Western
POLAND.
In POZNAN, fighting to eliminate the encircled enemy garrison continued.
By the evening of February 15, our troops mopped up a large part of the city
situated on the west bank of the WARTA River. By that time, the Nazi garrison
continued to hold the CITADEL district on the west bank of the WARTA and four
suburbs on the east bank of the river.
Developing the offensive on February 15, the troops of the 1st UKRAINIAN
Front seized the town of GRUNBERG in German Schlesien and the towns of
SOMMERSFELD and SORAU in the BRANDENBURG Province, major communications centers
and powerful enemy defensive strongholds, and took by force over 150 other
settlements, including the large settlements of EICHWALDAU, SCHWEINITZ,
NAUMBURG, GASSEN, BENAU, WELLERSDORF, TSCHIBSDORF. Fighting in this area on
February 14, the troops of the Front took over 2,100 Nazi men and officers
prisoner and captured 120 enemy aircraft at aerodromes.
Fighting northwest of BUDAPEST, our troops completed the elimination of the
scattered enemy groups that had forced their way from the western part of
BUDAPEST and had then been blocked in the woods. Fighting in this area on
February 14, our troops took 6,650 enemy men and officers prisoner. Among those
taken prisoner are Lt. Gen. BELNITZER, commander of the assault artillery of the
Budapest group, Lt. Gen. IMRE KALANDRY and Maj. Gen. LEM BERKOVICZ.
Reconnaissance raids and local fighting in a number of areas were reported on
the other sections of the front.
On February 14, 90 German tanks were disabled and destroyed on all fronts. A
total of 25 enemy aircraft were brought down in aerial combat or by
anti-aircraft guns.
