On February 10, the troops of the 3rd BELARUSSIAN Front, continuing their offensive, seized the town of Preussisch-Eylau, an important enemy defensive stronghold, and took by force over 30 other settlements, including GLOBUNEN, TIEFENTAHL, KORSCHELLEN, WACKERN, RODITTEN, SCHEWECKEN, TOPPRINEN, GALLEHNEN.

Troops of the 2nd BELARUSSIAN Front, crushing the resistance of an encircled group of the enemy, took by storming on February 10 the town of ELBING, a major communications center and a powerful enemy defensive stronghold on the right bank of the VISTULA River covering the approaches to the Danzig Bay. In the course of February 8 and 9, the troops of the Front took over 4,300 Nazi men and officers prisoner.

North and northwest of the town of SCHNEIDEMUHL, our troops took by force over 40 settlements, including the large settlements of KNACKSEE, GROSS BORN, REDERITZ, HOFSTEDT, HANSFELDE, ECKARTSBERGE, KLAUSDORF, STRANZ, KLEIN NACKEL, MARTE, DUNZICH.

In SCHNEIDEMUHL and POZNAN, fighting to eliminate the encircled enemy garrisons continued.

In the western part of BUDAPEST (BUDA), our troops, continuing to fight to eliminate the enemy’s garrison, seized several blocks. Fighting in this area on February 9, our troops took over 1,300 Nazi men and officers prisoner.

On February 9, 110 German tanks were disabled and destroyed on all fronts. A total of 70 enemy aircraft were brought down in aerial combat or by anti-aircraft guns.

Troops of the 3rd BELARUSSIAN Front, continuing their offensive, reached the approaches to the town of Preussisch-Eylau, the center of a fortified area in Eastern Prussia. This area consisted of a great number of four-embrasure iron-and-concrete permanent weapon emplacements covered by barbed wire entanglement and minefields. Soviet troops crushed the Nazi resistance and, after fierce fighting, seized the town of Preussisch-Eylau, the junction of three railways and six motor roads. According to confirmed data, up to 4,000 Nazis were eliminated. A total of 20 German tanks were disabled and burnt. Six tanks, 32 guns and large ammunition dumps were seized.

The self-propelled gun detachment commanded by senior officer Alekhin destroyed two German guns and three motor vehicles. The combat crew commanded by senior sergeant Karimov cut, with a group of infantrymen, into the enemy’s rear. The artillery men demolished a tank, two armored personnel carriers and a group of Nazis. The mortar detachment commanded by sergeant Gavrilchenko ruined a house turned by the Nazis into a permanent weapon emplacement. All the Nazis who had entrenched themselves there were eliminated. Repelling an enemy counterattack, senior sergeant Gavrilov eliminated 18 Nazis.
