On October 8 on the island of SAAREMAA (EZEL), our forces, continuing their offensive, secured 40 settlements, including the major settlements of VOHMA, TORISE, HAKJALA, MUSTJALA, SAUVERE, ABULA, MJATTA-SELJA, ANIJALA, and IRASE.
On their way to RIGA, our forces took the town and a major railroad station of OGRE, and secured over 60 other settlements, including PABAZI, INCUKALNS, KALNAMUIZA, ROPAZI, KANGARISI, TINUZI, JAUNOGRE, SILI and the railroad stations of PABAZI, INCUKALNS, REMINE, and KANTARA.
Units of the 1st Baltic Front, supported by units of the 3rd Belarussian Front, launched an offensive from the districts situated to the northwest and southwest of SAULIAI (SHAVLI) to break down extensive enemy defenses to advance up to 100 kilometers in four days of continuous fighting and widen the gap in enemy defenses to 280 kilometers.
During the offensive our forces took major enemy defensive strongpoints of TELSIAI, PLUNGENAI, MAZEIKIAI, TRISKIAI, TIRKSLIAI, SEDA, VORNI, KELMAI, and secured over 2,000 other settlements, including the major settlements of KRUOPIAI, PAPILE, KURSENAI, KURTVIANAI, JOSEFOVO, RAUDENA, JUZEFOV, SAVKIANAI, UPINA, VITSODZIAI, UZVENTAI, VAIGOVO, KROZI, SAVDINIKIAI, STULGI, NEMOKSTAI, PIEVENAI, NEVARENAI, EIGIRDZIAI, VESVIANAI, NERIMDACIAI, LUNNIKI, JANOPOL, POVANDENIAI, KOLTINIANAI, VERSIADAI, SKAVDVILI, ZEMALE, ZIDIKAI, ILAKIAI, DERVIANAI, KOVNATOVO, LEPLAVKI, ZORANAI, MEDINGIANAI, TVERY, ELKI, RETOVO, SILELIAI, DUMSISKIAI, VIDUKLI, VODZGIRAI, SNIRSTIMONIAI, VARNOLAVKI, ERZVILKIAI, DARGAITELI, and the railroad stations of KUZI, PAVENCIAI, PATIRELIAI, RAVDENY, TRISKIAI, DUSEIKIAI, TELSIAI, LEPLAVKI, VIDUKLI, and VARLAUKIS.
On the right-hand bank of the River NAREV to the south of PULTUSM, our forces successfully repulsed attacks launched by enemy infantry and tanks.
In Hungary, to the north and west of the town of BECESCABA, our forces, continuing their successful offensive, took the towns and railroad junctions of MEZOTUR, SENTES, HODMEZOVASARHELY, the town of SARVAS, and secured over 150 other settlements, including the major settlements of FJUZES-DJARMAT, NAD-BAJOM, ENDRED, GADOROS, SEGVAR and the railroad stations of NAD-BAJOM, FJUZES-DJARMAT, SARVAS, GADOROS, and SEGVAR. On October 6 and 7, the Soviet forces captured over 4,000 enemy personnel.
To the southwest of the Romanian town of TURNU SEVERIN, our forces, together with units of the People’s Liberation Army of Yugoslavia, secured the settlements of PETROVAC, LESKOVAC, ZDRELO, KREPOLJIN, JAOZANICA, MILATOVAC, ZLOT, PODGORAC, and BOGOVINA. Our forces finally terminated enemy forces encircled in the areas around KLOKOCHEVAC and ZAECAR.
Reconnaissance operations were reported elsewhere on the front.
On October 7, our forces destroyed 156 German tanks on all fronts. The Soviet air and air defense forces downed 31 enemy aircraft.
