After a two-day siege and slogging combat mopped up the enemy groupings and, on March 6, the 2nd Belarussian Front forces took the town and fortress of Graudenz (Grudziadz), a formidable enemy strongpoint on the lower flow of the Vistula river. The fighting in Grudziadz resulted in capturing 5,000-plus prisoners and the fortress commandant, Maj.-Gen. Fricke, and his staff, as well as a lot of weapons and military equipment. At the same time, the advancing Red Army forces seized the towns of Tretten, Malchow, southwest and west of Danzig, and upwards of another 60 settlements such as large the locations of Alt Kischau, Wille, Lubon, Gross Tuchen, Friedrichshuld, Varzin, Segentin, Abtshagen, Alt Steinort, Lase and Gross Mellen.
Southwest of the town of Koeslin, the 2nd Belarussian Front forces killed the besieged enemy grouping, capturing Koeslin District commander Lt.-Gen. von Zielow along with his staff and 1,000-plus German soldiers and officers. On March 6, the successfully advancing 1st Belarussian Front forces took the towns of Belgard, Treptow, Greifenberg, Cammin, Gulzow and Plate, key centers of communication and formidable German strongpoints in West Pomerania, and stormed into more than 500 another locations, including Gross Jestin, Garrin, Tessin, Pribbernow, Kantren, Hohenschonau, Lenz and Moritzfelde. South of the town of Schivelbein, the Front’s forces enveloped a large enemy grouping and destroyed it. During March 4 and 5, the Front’s forces captured upwards of 2,500 prisoners.
In Hungary, northeast of Lake Balaton, the Red Army turned attacks of the infantry and armor large troops of the enemy. Reconnaissance operations and local fighting continued on other fronts. 33 enemy tanks were damaged and destroyed and 57 enemy aircraft were downed on March 5. Besides, 43 aircraft were destroyed on the airfield in the vicinity of the town of Stargard.
