In HUNGARY, our troops seized, as a result of stubborn battles, the town and
railroad junction of HATVAN.
Reconnaissance raids and local fighting in a number of areas were reported on
the other sections of the front.
On November 25, our troops disabled and destroyed 22 enemy tanks on all
fronts. Twelve enemy aircraft were brought down in air battles or by
anti-aircraft fire.
Troops of the Fourth UKRAINIAN Front continued the offensive. Our troops,
advancing along a mountain valley, met with strong resistance from the enemy
near the large populated area of Snina. The Nazis had created a fortified area
here which covered the approaches to the town of Humenne. Following a flanking
maneuver along the mountains and a lightning attack from the front, our troops
routed the enemy, who had taken up defensive positions in the area of Snina.
Despite wet snow and thick fog, the Soviet troops advanced by 20 km and seized
the town and railroad junction of Humenne. Other Soviet units, exploiting the
offensive, crossed the Laborets River, which had burst its banks after rains,
and seized the town of Michalovce – an important railroad and motor road
junction. The enemy sustained heavy loses to manpower and materiel. A total of
14 guns, seven trains, 350 railroad cars and other trophies were captured from
the enemy. A total of 560 Nazi men and officers were taken prisoner.
In Hungary, our troops seized the town of Hatvan. The enemy had turned this
town into a powerful pocket of resistance. The Nazi command had ordered its
troops to hold the town of Hatvan at any cost. Moving at night across a locality
without roads, our cavalrymen made a flanking maneuver, seized the bridge across
the Zadva River and cut the enemy garrison’s retreat route. At the same time,
Soviet infantry and tanks attacked the Nazis from south and southwest and burst
into the town. After stubborn battles, the enemy was routed. The enemy units,
leaving arms and equipment behind, tried to escape but were attacked by Soviet
cavalry and dispersed on their way. Over one day of battles, up to 1,000 Nazis
were eliminated and eight German tanks burnt. A total of 750 German and
Hungarian men and officers were taken prisoner.
