On January 31, the forces of the Second Belorussian Front successfully
assaulted the towns of Heilsberg and Friedlang, major transport links and
heavily defended areas in the center of East Prussia, and over 50 other
settlements, including Kwanditten, Medenau, Gross Heidekrug (14 kilometers to
the west of Konigsberg), Stockheim, Minten, Krekollen, and Knipstein.
On January 30, the forces of the Second Belorussian Front seized 53 German
aircraft and captured over 3,300 German personnel in East Prussia.
To the north and northeast of the town of Allenstein, our forces secured over
40 settlements, including such important points as Preussiten, Gross Lemkendorf,
Ober-Kapkeim, and Munsterberg. At the same time, to the northwest of
Allenstein, our forces successfully repulsed mounted attacks of the enemy.
Around the town of Torun (Torn), the Soviet forces were still bearing down on
the German garrison encircled in the city.
To the north and northeast of the town of Schneidemuhl, our forces secured
the German Pommern towns of Flatov and Jastrow, and over 50 other settlements,
including Radawnitz, Tarnowke, and Hammer.
The forces of the First Belorussian Front, continuing their successful
offensive to the west and southwest of Poznan, crossed the German border into
the province of Brandenburg and on January 31 secured the towns of Landsberg,
Meseritz, Schwibus, and Zullichau, powerfully fortified important transport
junctions on the way to Frankfurt-on-Oder, and the town of Friedeberg together
with over 100 other settlements, including such important points as Kladow,
Bayersdorf, Mohrn, Poppe, Paradis, Kutschlau, Skampe, and Gross Blumberg.
In Poznan, the Soviet forces were still bearing down on the German force
encircled in the city.
To the west and southwest of the town of Katovice, our forces secured over 40
settlements, including such important points as Heidebreck, Oderwalde,
Ratiborhammer, Golleow, and Weljepole.
To the north and northwest of the town of Lucenec, our forces, continuing
their successful offensive on restricted mountainous and foresty terrain,
secured over 60 settlements, including such important points as Polomka, Brezno,
Gronec, Koritarki, Mitna, Abelowa, Turje Pole, and Lest.
In Budapest, our forces were eliminating the enemy garrison encircled in
Buda, the western part of the city. On January 30, our forces had captured 8,200
enemy personnel in the western part of the Hungarian capital.
On January 30, our forces eliminated 132 German tanks on all fronts. The
Soviet air and air defense forces downed 40 enemy
aircraft.
