On September 23, the forces of the Leningrad Front, continuing their
offensive, took over the city of PJARNU (PERNOV), a major post in the Gulf of
RIGA and a large highway junction in Southern Estonia; the town and railroad
station of VILJANDI, and over 700 other settlements, including the towns of
TURI, VAHASTU, KADVA, LELLE, KARU, KAREVERE, VANA-VJANDRA, VOHMA, REGULDI, and
railroad stations of LELLE, KARU, OLLEPA, and VOHMA. The forces of the 3rd
Baltic Front, continuing their offensive, took over the town of VALMIERA, and
secured over 80 other settlements, including KJARSTNA, MAEKULA, SURESILMA,
CUMPI, RENCENI, JAUNIERCENI and railroad stations of PIKSARI and SAULE. To
the east of the city of Riga, our forces, continuing their offensive, secured
over 150 settlements, including VASI, BUTLERI, LUTENI, MIRTI, MUSTES, MENDELE,
KOAKNESE and railroad stations of RANKA, ROPLAINI, BALTAVA, and
KOAKNESE. Elsewhere on the front local combat engagements went on. On
September 22 our forces destroyed 57 German tanks on all fronts. The Soviet air
and air defense forces downed 39 enemy aircraft.
