On January 27 our forces, continuing their successful offensive on their way
to Konigsberg, secured the town and railway junction of Gerdauen and over 300
other settlements, including such important points as Postnicken, Schaakswitte,
Gallgarben, Powunden, Knoppelsdorf, Neuhausen (7 kilometers to the northwest of
Konigsberg), Steinbek, Borchersdorf, Tomsdorf, Blankenau, Allenau,
Bartchersdorf, Friedenberg, and Dietrichsdorf.
The forces of the Second and Third Belorussian Fronts comleted the breakdown
of powerfully fortified line of German defenses among Masurian Lakes, which the
Nazis had thought to be impassable since the First World War, to secure the
towns of Barten, Drengfurt, Rastenburg, Rhein, Nikolainen, Rudschannie, Puppen,
Babinten, Tearvisch, and over 250 other settlements.
At an airfield near Marienburg, the forces of the Second Belorussian Front
seized 34 German aircraft.
To the northwest of the town of Allenstein, our forces repulsed strong
mounted westward enemy counterattacks, inflicting heavy casualties and damage
upon the enemy.
To the south of the town of Kulm, our forces fought their way across the
Vistula and, seizing a bridgehead on the western bank of the river, joined
friendly forces acting to the north of the town of Bydgoszcz (Bromberg).
Encircling an enemy garrison in the town of Torun, our forces were bearing down
on it on the previous day.
To the north, west, and south of the town of Poznan, the forces of the First
Belorussian Front, continuing their successful offensive, secured the towns of
Kohlmar, Budzin, Richenwalde, Oborniki, Szamter, Buk, Stanszew, Schrimm, Cempin,
Dolzig, and over 500 other settlements. In the town of Poznan, out forces
completed the encirclement of an enemy force and started bearing down on it.
The forces of the First Ukrainian Front, continuing their successful
offensive, on January 27 secured the towns of Sosnowiec, Bendzin, Dombrowa
Gurne, Czeladz, and Myslowice, major mining towns of the Dombrow coal basin, and
also secured the Polish towns of Kobylin, Bojanowo, Oswiecim, and the German
towns of Wolau, Dichernfurt, and Obernigk.
The forces of the Fourth Ukrainian Front, continuing their successful
offensive on the restricted Carpathian mountainous and foresty terrain, on
January 27 secured the towns of Wadowice, Spiska Nowa Ves, Spiska Stara Ves, and
Levoca — important transport junctions and defense areas, and over 50 other
settlements.
In Budapest, our forces bearing down on the encircled enemy force took over
another 10 blocks.
To the southwest of Budapest, our forces successfully repulsed mounted enemy
attacks and secured several settlements in sweeping counterattacks, thus gaining
advantageous positions.
On January 26 our forces eliminated 42 German tanks on all fronts, of which
29 tanks were killed to the southwest of Budapest. The Soviet air and air
defense forces downed 36 enemy aircraft.
