On January 24, in East Prussia to the south and southwest of the town of Insterburg, our forces secured the towns of Angerburg and Widminnen and over 250 other settlements, including such important points as Ilmsdorf, Muljen, Jodlauken, Karpowen, Schlossberg, and Lindeheim.

On January 24, the forces of the Second Belorussian Front, continuing their successful offensive, secured the heavily fortified East Prussian towns of Likk, Neuendorf, and Bialla, protecting the ways to the East Prussian lakes, and, in the westrn part of East Prussia, secured the towns of Rozenberg and Riesenburg, and over 200 other settlements, including Schpietelberg, Alt Garschen, Reichau, Gross Germenau, Miswalde, Alt Chriestburg. At the same time, Soviet forces secured the Polish towns of Briesen (Wonbrzezno), Schonsee (Kowalewo), and Dobrzin.

The forces of the First Belorussian Front, continuing their successful offensive, by the night January 23 took over the town of Kalisz, an important transport junction and defense area on the way to Breslavl. On January 24, the Soviet forces secured the towns of Pogurz, Szubin, Cnin, Janowo, Klecko, Wreszen, Hocz, and over 800 other settlements.

On January 24, the forces of the First Ukrainian Front staged a sweeping mpointed attack on the town and fortress of Oppeln, an important center of military imdustry of German Silesia, and a heavily fortified major railway and highway junction on the Oder. At the same time, the Soviet forces to the north of the town of Breslau, secured the Polish town of Ravicz and the German town of Trachenberg, the town of Festenberg, Neue Mittelwalde, Gross Wartenberg, and over 200 other German settlements, including Schollendorf, Pontwitz, Nedlingen, Margaret (7 kilometers to the southeast of Breslau), Rattwitz, Eltsch, Mahlsdorf, Otmut, Bergstadt, and Waldbrucken. To the southwest of Lodz, our forces destroyed an encircled enemy group and seized 53 tanks, capturing over 3,000 German personnel and eliminating no less than 6,000.

To the south and  southwest of Krakow, our forces secured over 40 settlements, including Krzencin, Przitkowice, Kalwaria, Lenkawica, Szlezowice, and the railway stations of Kalwaria, Skawce, and Sucha.

The forces ot Second Ukrainian Front, launching an offensive to the to the north of the town of Miskolc, broke through heavy enemy defenses on restricted mountainous and foresty terrain, advanced by up to 20 kilometers, widened the gap in the enemy defenses to 40 kilometers; by the night January 23 secured the Czech towns of Rozniawa and Jelszawa - heavily defended enemy areas - and over 80 other settlements, including Ugorna, Nizna (Nizna’a) Slana, Ochtina, Revuca, Pila, Klenovec, Zlatno and the railway stations of  Betlar, Nizna (Nizna’a) Slana, Stitnik, Revuca, and Gnusta.

In Budapest, the Soviet forces were meanwhile bearing down on the enemy force encircled in Buda, the western part of the city.

To the southwest of Budapest, our forces repulsed strong mounted attacks of the enemy trying to break through to Budapest.

On January 23, our forces eliminated 83 German tanks on all fronts, of which 34 were killed to the southwest of Budapest. The Soviet air and air defense forces downed 23 enemy aircraft.
